Week 12

  1. As Beart and Elli, we want to use our unique sizes, powers and strength to solve the puzzles of this labyrinth-like cave system.

 

  1. As Elli, I want to use my adaptations to burn through the spider’s cobwebs, so that the way out of the cave is no longer blocked.

 

  1. As Beart, I want to use my claws to slash through the Molemen that want to take Elli’s adaptations.

 

  1. As Elli, I want to use my small size to pass through the cave vent which Beart cannot access, to reach a switch which opens the door for Beart.

 

  1. As Elli, I want to use my flying ability to reach some high place which Beart cannot reach, to turn on a switch which opens the door for Beart.

Of the mechanics above, Sam would like the ones to do with puzzle solving, as mentioned in the player experience goal post (link). This stems from Sam ability to create games, and solving coding problems whilst creating games. Sam would also like adaptations, especially collecting them, due to his love of Pokemon Go (Niantic, 2016), a game where collection is a core mechanic.

Can be used to fill pitfalls

Beart can push these boulders by the player running into them using the D or A key. From then the player can move the boulder to fill over a pit.
Pitfalls Hazard Puzzle component (blocks path). The players can fall down it to their death. If the player as Beart falls down it, it will collide with spikes that will do damage to the player and spawn them back up to by the pit.
Ability Crystals Collectible Gives Elli new abilities Collected by Beart or Elli If the player walks up to it as Beart or Elli using their walking keys, they will collect the crystal which will allow them to leave the level, On the new level Elli will have a new ability associated to the crystal (See ability table).
Honey Collectible Restores Beart’s health. Collected by Beart If the player as Beart runs into the the honey it will restore 20% of Beart’s total health
Water Sections Hazards Puzzle component (Can kill Beart, hides switches) Hurts Beart on a collision In parts of the levels there are water sections. These water sections can only be accessed by the player as Elli, and only if she has her water ability. If the player collides with water as Beart, they will take damage and be spawned back to the start of the water hazard.
Cave Opening Level Entrance/ Exit The exit/entrance point Beart and Elli exit/enter the level through this place. This is where the player exits/enters the levels in the game. The player can only exit the level if they have collected the ability crystal of the level and killed all the enemies
Cobwebs Obstacle Puzzle component (blocks Beart and Elli’s way Elli can destroy the cobwebs through shooting fireballs as her fire form. The player can press right shift playing as Elli to shoot a fireball that on collision destroys the cobweb.

When Elli has collected this ability, the player can press R as Beart and Elli will become a rock that Beart can throw using left control, which can break unreachable breakable doors or kill unreachable enemies. Collect the Green Crystal at the end of one of the levels.
Beart   Claws Slashes Through pressing left shift as Beart, the player can break breakable doors and kill enemies.

Challenges:

 

Challenge 1: Solve the puzzles in the game

– What choices are available to the player?

As Elli, the player can use switches to open unbreakable doors. The player as Beart can use his claws to break down breakable doors blocking the path. As Beart the player can pull boulders blocking the path or push boulders into pits to bridge the path.

– How does the game convey choice through the interface?

Obvious camera orientation depending on which character (Beart/ Elli) is being controlled currently. Buttons brightly colored. Pleasing sound when buttons are pressed. An uplifting success sound is played when a puzzle is solved.

– For each choice, what actions available to the player?

Utilising the unique strength and abilities of the two main characters to solve the puzzles. Apart they can only solve part of the puzzle, as a Team they can complete the level.

– How do rules that dictate system response to these actions?

Puzzles are created to block the path of the player. Must be solved to continue.

Buttons are positioned in places only Elli can reach. Elli cannot interact with breakable doors but Beart can.

– What feedback is provided to players?

Satisfying sound upon completion of puzzle. Door texture changes as they are broken. Buttons go from an unpressed state to a pressed state. Boulders are interactive until moved into their intended place (lock into a pitfall)

 

 

Challenge 2: Defeat the enemies in the level

– What choices are available to the player?

As Beart the player can attack the enemies through using their claws

– How does the game convey choice through the interface?

The ingame tutorial teaches that the claws are an ingame weapon, enemy flashes red to show the claws are doing damage.

– For each choice, what actions available to the player?

Beart can only use his claws to do damage to the enemies.

– How do rules that dictate system response to these actions?

Claws do standard amount of damage. Beart can slash once per second. Beart can only slash if he has health remaining.  Beart can damage enemies, can take damage. Elli cannot.

– What feedback is provided to players?

The enemies flash red when taking damage and damage
